Focus: Project strategy and development, management and training
Few if any turf professionals possess the broad and deep experience that Bryan Barkley brings to Tom Irwin Advisors. The holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia, and a Master’s degree in Golf Course Architecture from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, Barkley has handled the broadest range of turf-related responsibilities.
He’s worked in golf course construction, professional baseball (the single-A Connecticut Tigers), higher education athletics (the University of Connecticut), and municipalities (the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts).
Along the way he’s won several awards, including being named Sports Turf Manager of the Year in 2013 by the National Sports Turf Managers Association and Baseball’s Minor League.
Now all of that experience is being applied to serving his clients at Tom Irwin Advisors.
“I bring an in-depth understanding of the needs and concerns of all constituents to my work, from city officials to minor league team owners to university athletic directors,” said Barkley. “Knowing how passionate the Tom Irwin Advisors team is about the success of their clients, this is a great opportunity to continue doing what I love to do – being outdoors and helping people create and maintain green spaces in a sustainable way.”
As Assistant Superintendent of Parks for the city of Cambridge, Barkley oversaw more than 120 sites throughout the city, from parks and plazas to playgrounds and athletic fields. He’s seen the common mistakes that can occur across the project lifecycle. He knows what it takes to successfully develop and maintain these spaces.
